Your Webinar Description:

Sammy’s Story follows the behavioral and emotional journey of a dog learning to feel safer and more empowered during handling and veterinary care. Through Sammy’s case, this presentation explores how fear, stress, and unique medical and behavioral challenges required creative, out-of-the-box strategies to accomplish even routine procedures, including a successful blood draw. Attendees will learn how individualized, humane training approaches, cooperative care, and innovative problem-solving can improve welfare, reduce distress, and strengthen collaboration among caregivers, trainers, and veterinary professionals

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:

  • Recognize how fear, stress, medical history, and individual circumstances can influence behavior during handling and veterinary care.
  • Describe cooperative care and how they support emotional well-being and safer care.
  • Identify creative, individualized, and out-of-the-box strategies that can help overcome barriers to necessary veterinary procedures, including blood draws.
  • Understand how behavior modification techniques, including desensitization, counterconditioning, consent-based training, and protective tools such as muzzle training, can support successful outcomes.
  • Appreciate the value of collaboration, flexibility, and innovation among pet guardians, trainers, and veterinary teams when standard approaches are not sufficient.
  • Apply lessons from Sammy’s case to develop more compassionate, low-stress, and adaptable approaches in their own work.
