Webinar Description

In recent times of political turmoil, the term “narcissist” has become a buzz word. What is a narcissist? Are they a danger to you, your business, animals and their family members? Can you motivate a narcissist to take responsibility and serve the needs of a companion animal
given the entitlement that comes with the disorder? Please note this webinar begins with several discalimers. We are not diagnosing medical conditions. This is a conversation regarding how you an deal with difficult clients in your business that may appear to have narcissistic tendencies

This webinar presents an overview of narcissism, the types, exploitive tactics you may face and what you can do about it.

  • Understand why dog trainers, especially those in the force free community, are highly vulnerable to exploitation due to their high levels of empathy.
  • Learn the difference between narcissistic traits, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, and Psychopathy.
  • No, you cannot diagnose, but you should take protective action if you suspect. Learn why a narcissist is like a blind person who does not know they cannot see.
  • Learn how the narcissist wears a “mask” to reflect what you want to see.
  • Understanding how the lack of empathy impacts all of their interactions, and why an appeal to empathy backfires.
  • Learn the difference between cure, treatment, and why treatment can backfire.
  • Sympathy for the “Devil???” Feeling sorry that the narcissist experienced childhood trauma while also setting boundaries against the harm they themselves now perpetuate.
  • Debunking the “Gaston” stereotype. Not all narcissists fit the grandiose mold.
  • Learn to spot and understand covert narcissism, the “cry bully,” and learn how they trick you into servitude by using your own empathy against you.
  • Charity focused narcissism: When some do gooders of the world are actually up to no good, a special consideration for trainers working with rescue organizations.
  • Tactics commonly employed by those with NPD to control, manipulate and engage in malignant harm: Gaslighting, Stonewalling, DARVO, Shaming, Flying monkeys
  • The “family cult” surrounding narcissism. Why family may seem unaware they are being abused.
  • Learn how the narcissist might fool you into blaming others for the dog’s behaviour issues, turning you inadvertently into a flying monkey.
  • Strategies that can, and should be employed if you suspect narcissism: Grey Rock, No Contact and Boundary Setting

This overview into the dark realities of Narcissistic Personality Disorder focuses on increasing awareness of the impact of this disorder. We will also look at the protective measures you can
take to protect yourself, your business and others from exploitation and harm. It is not meant as a means to diagnose anyone, which a qualified and appropriately licensed professional should always do.

Your Presenter – Yvette Van Veen PCT-A

Yvette Van Veen presents the seminar. Yvette  has two decades of experience training dogs, lives and works in London Ontario

Yvette returns to PPG after a hiatus to discuss a combination of dog science, academic literature derived from studies and courses taken
pertaining to human disorders found in the DSM plus a good dose of, “wish I knew this earlier”. She resides with her son in London Ontario, and as always, continues to allow the dogs to sleep on the bed. She’s now ready to share her lived experiences so you can avoid the pitfalls she fell into! In addition to her work in the animal training industry, she also paints in watercolour, because learning never ends.
