A Fun and Furry Guide

This blog post earned Honorable Mention in the Pet Professional Guild’s Pets and Their People Celebrating Life Together   community outreach competition in the ‘Pet Professional – Write a Blog Post’ category.

Ready to turn your four-legged friend into a frisbee-catching superstar? Training your dog to play frisbee is not only a blast, but it’s also a fantastic way to enhance your bond and keep your pup fit and happy. Here’s your ultimate guide to turning your dog into a frisbee fanatic!

First things first: not all frisbees are created equal. Look for a dog-friendly frisbee that’s soft and durable. These are gentler on your dog’s teeth and gums and can withstand plenty of enthusiastic chomping.

Create a safe play zone free of obstacles that could lead to mishaps. Avoid hard surfaces like concrete where your dog could hurt themselves. Supervise playtime to make sure the frisbee fun stays safe and sound.

Introduce the frisbee to your pup like it’s the coolest new toy ever. Let them sniff it, nuzzle it, and maybe even give it a little lick. Make it a game by using treats to create a positive association. The frisbee should be the star of the show!

Begin with gentle, slow rolls on the ground. Think of it as frisbee training wheels. Animate the frisbee and roll it just a few feet away. Cheer them on like they just won a gold medal when they chase after or interact with the frisbee. Short, enthusiastic sessions are the way to go!

Once your dog is consistently engaging with the frisbee as you roll it away, you can start giving the frisbee a little bit of air time. Begin with gentle, short throws right next to their head. Praise your dog enthusiastically when they catch the frisbee and show positive encouragement even when they don’t!

As your dog gets the hang of it, start increasing the distance and height of your throws. Slow and steady is the mantra. Remember to keep it fun—cheer loudly, give lots of treats, and celebrate every catch like it’s the best thing ever!

Consistency is your best friend. Regular practice is key, but keep it short and sweet to maintain your dog’s excitement. Aim for 1-3 minutes a few times a week. Mix it up with different throws and tricks to keep things interesting.

Frisbee is a high-energy game, so keep an eye on your dog’s energy levels. Make sure they stay hydrated and don’t push them too hard. If they’re panting or looking a bit pooped, it’s time for a break. Play smart and keep the game enjoyable!

With a little patience and a lot of fun, you’ll have your dog leaping and catching frisbees like a champ. So, grab that frisbee, head outside, and get ready for some tail-wagging, frisbee-flying action. Your dog is going to love it, and you will too!

Let the frisbee games begin!
