Homemade Dog Treat Recipe: Gandhi’s Globs
Gandhi’s globs were developed as a high value meal replacement for training reinforcements. Gandhi loves his food and feeding him these during many of his training session acts as a part meal replacement to help him to maintain his weight.
Ingredients:
- 1 kg or 2lb chicken mince, cooked
- 60 gm or 2oz fresh parsley chopped finely or vitamised
- 500 gm or 1lb carrots minced or vitamised
- 200 gm or 7oz celery chopped finely or vitamised
- 200 gm or 7oz zucchini chopped finely or vitamised
- Can diced tomato including juice
- 2 heaped teaspoon minced ginger
- 1-2 heaped teaspoon turmeric – note: some dogs’ poo have a yellowish tinge after eating turmeric, this is normal and no cause for alarm.
- 4 large eggs
- 1 – 1 ½ cups wholemeal flour
- 1 cup wheat bran
- 1 cup oat bran
- Water if required
Method:
- Heat oven to 200 degrees Celsius (approx. 400 degrees Fahrenheit)
- Grease cookie sheet or line with baking paper
- Mix together vegetables, add chicken mince. If it is pet food mince, remember to mix with your hands to ensure no obvious bone pieces have gone through the mincer.
- Mix ginger and turmeric thoroughly throughout the chicken mix so it is spread evenly throughout.
- Beat eggs and add to the mix
- Mix remaining dry ingredients in a separate bowl and add to the chicken mix.
- Add water if needed – mix should be malleable as a drop cookie batter.
- Place on cookie sheet either as slabs or dollops with a teaspoon
- Bake for 20 minutes or until golden brown and at least 75 degrees Celsius (170 degrees Fahrenheit)
Storage:
If they have been baked as a slab, cut into desired sized cubes.
Store in airtight container in refrigerator after they have thoroughly cooled. They also freeze very well for up to 6 months.
Substitutions:
NOTE- FOR A GLUTEN-FREE OPTION:
Omit the turmeric and ginger (processing of these spices can contaminate them with gluten); omit the whole meal flour and wheat bran; omit the tomatoes.
Replace with tapioca or corn flour, almond flour can also be used; increase the oat bran amount, blueberries are also a good replacement.
Note too, that some oats can contain gluten depending on how and where they are processed, always read the labels carefully.
