    with Mariah Hinds

    ceu: IAABC - 1 CEU, CPDT - 1 CEU, PPG - 1 CEU, KPA - 1 CEU

This webinar outlines the steps to teaching a dog to stay no matter what the distractions, distance, time, environment or combination of these factors. Stays start with the dog making tiny 2 or 3 second choices and they can grow to staying while guests enter the house, staying while you stand 40 feet away for 5 minutes and to staying in a chair or on a mat for 60 minutes while you teach a class or give a presentation.

Stay is also very useful for pet owners. It can be utilized to prevent and address a lot of issues from pet dog owners. Bolting out doors, begging, counter surfing and jumping up on people can all be eliminated by teaching the dog to stay reliably instead of the undesired behavior. Stays are a great way to incorporate training into your regular routine.

    Webinar Objectives

    • To teach the steps to teaching a dog to stay with:
    • distractions
    • distance
    • time
    • environment
    • combination

    Incredible Tricks Through Shaping

(Incredible Tricks Through Shaping is a six part webinar series. You can watch one or you can watch six. Each webinar sits as an individual skill training session; however they do build in skill level so if you are a beginner it may be best to do them in order.)

    Part 1/6
Teach Your Dog to Wave and High Five

    Presented by Mariah Hinds

    CEUs: PPAB 1, CCPDT 1, IAABC 1

Do you want to teach your dog fun tricks? Shaping is the fastest way to harness the power of your dog's mind and start your dog on the path to really awesome skills.

We will start with the foundation of what is shaping and how to get your dog started with offering behaviors that you can reward. Your dog will learn how to get in a low object and get on an object. We will then teach the dog how to shake and wave with different feet and build that behavior so the dog is able to wave at you from a distance and will only offer it when you cue the behavior. This fun trick can then be used to teach additional fun tricks!

    Learning Objectives

    • Discuss the power of a clicker or reward word
    • Setting up your shaping environment
    • Capturing the first contact of the foot hitting an object
    • Adding criteria to getting in an object
    • Capturing the first contact of getting on an object.
    • Adding criteria to getting on an object
    • Capturing a single paw target to an object
    • Adding height to your foot target
    • Adding stimulus control of individual paws
    • Adding a cue
    • Adding duration and distance to wave and shake
    • Generalizing the behavior

Mariah has a long record of success using positive reinforcement training and believes that rewarding dogs for the behavior you want works and works well. Building appropriate choices is a lot more effective than force, pain or fear. The current research and Mariah’s 12 years of experience in the field validate that the best way to change undesirable dog behavior is through positive reinforcement. Mariah says “we don’t use physical corrections to teach a dog a new behavior because that is simply not necessary or effective”. This doesn’t mean you’ll be forced to carry around reward cookies for the life of your dog. We steadily phase out food rewards once your dog has learned the new behavior and life rewards are introduced to support new behavior retention.
